There were a lot of hackers hacking to the eBay corporate network in 2014.
There were hackers but the backers were in a unauthorized group, meaning that we don't know the hacker's identity.
In 2014, Ebay found out that there was a major data breach. The hackers weren't identified or caught at all, however, the hackers gained access to eBay's corporate network by taking the login credentials of a low number of employees. What was stolen by the hackers was passwords that were encrypted, names, DOBs, email addresses, phone numbers and so much more. About 145,000,000 eBay users were impacted. It was one of the largest data breaches at that time.
It happened between the late of February to early March of 2014. eBay only discovered the breach in early May of 2014. The eBay corporate network was targeted in San Jose, California, USA.
There isn't a real reason why they did it, however, there are possible reasons why they did it. They hacked the eBay corporate network to gain access to PayPal accounts, they also can hack into people's passwords to access other people's banking account, email, or social media account.
The attack was carried out by credential theft, unauthorized access, and data extraction.
